{"id":2,"date":"2016-02-19T10:35:43","date_gmt":"2016-02-19T10:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.binfieldcofechurches.org.uk\/binfieldarcproject\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2017-01-13T09:54:29","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T09:54:29","slug":"about-our-fundraising","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.binfieldcofechurches.org.uk\/binfieldarcproject\/about-our-fundraising\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>A little of our history&#8230;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>\u201cIn 1226, Henry III granted to the church of All Saints on Binfield a piece of ground for\u00a0making a courtyard\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All Saints\u2019 is a Grade II* listed church with a history going back to the 12<sup>th<\/sup> Century. It was originally one of the chapels of the Royal Manor of Cookham, that was given to the Abbey of Cirencester by Henry I, and records show that the church was appropriated in 1347 by the Abbot. The church which stands today dates back to the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Century, with mid 1800\u2019s additions and restorations designed by the architect, Benjamin Ferry.<\/p>\n<p>There are many historical features including the Norman font bowl, the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Century carved wooden porch, and a 15<sup>th<\/sup> Century window with glass depicting St. George and the Dragon. In the chancel you can see the oldest half-effigy brass memorial in Berkshire in honour of the Rector of Binfield, dated 1361.<\/p>\n<p>The church has remained an integral part of the community over the years. The poet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Pope\" target=\"_blank\">Alexander Pope<\/a> lived nearby and sang in the church choir as a boy in the early 1700s.<\/p>\n<h5>Today,<\/h5>\n<p>&#8230;we celebrate many baptisms, marriages and funerals \u2013 did you know the Queen attended a Christening at All Saints\u2019, just after she was married, in 1948! \u00a0All of these occasions are added to the Parish records which date back to 1538. Perhaps there are records of your\u00a0ancestors here?<\/p>\n<p>As a church, the ministries we are involved in include a weekly homeless drop in (the Binfield Lighthouse), a night shelter in the winter, a Clothesbank to distribute clothing to families in need in the Bracknell area, supporting the Bracknell Foodbank, a lunch club for the elderly of the village, supporting low income families with fresh food during the school holidays, a mother and toddler group, and children and youth work.
